Relax & Unwind With Us

Enjoy Our New Treatments

We are an unpretentious and unique destination spa nestled on a mountainside minutes from the vibrancy of downtown Asheville. Along with traditional Japanese bathing and soaking, in completely private outdoor salt tubs, guests enjoy spa-style showers, first-class massage therapy, nature setting and sounds, locally sourced spa products – including CBD salves, local, handcrafted signature soaps, apparel, totes and more. Guests don a Japanese Yukata (cotton robe) and sandals before retiring to their private hot tub overlooking the National Forest.

Treetop Sauna

Enjoy Shoji’s newest hot box, a sophisticated 20-minute sauna experience for deep detox and rehabilitation. After sweating out toxins, refresh on the outside Treetop deck for another 20 minutes of renewal. This medical sauna offers a full spectrum of wavelengths: near, mid, and far infrared. A full spectrum heater is important because each spectrum of infrared waves provides different levels of skin penetration and light therapy. Our Sauna is created with Natural Red Cedar for its medicinal and structural qualities. Natural Red Cedar is also known for its astringent properties, meaning it helps cleanse your skin, which enhances the already powerful detoxification benefits. When you step into our Natural Red Cedar sauna you will feel and smell the powerful natural wood aromas, leaving your skin feeling tightened and refreshed.

An advantage of our Rapid Internal Heating System is that it can increase your endurance and strengthen your immune system. While other saunas may take 10 – 15 minutes to work up a sweat, when you step into our sauna, you will begin to sweat almost immediately. A rapidly heating sauna simulates the effect of working out because it increases your internal body temperature at a similar rate. Not only does this increase your heat tolerance, which leads to improved athletic performance, it also stimulates your immune system, which can make it better at fighting off infections and disease. Complete your detoxification ritual with our Senjo Exfoliation for maximum benefits.

The Savasana Room

Our Savasana Room is where you are treated to a deep, whole body experience from natural therapies. The perfect, restful conclusion to a sequence of services with us. Rest and repose on tatami mats that deliver “far-infrared” heat deep into the body to help relieve stiffness and joint pain all while easing you into a deeper state of relaxation. The embedded gem stones emit negative ions providing an additional layer of meditation and calm. Weighted blankets, neck and knee bolsters, meditation chairs and more all work together to create that deep state of rest and renewal.

Who says you shouldn't have it all?

Rich cocoa, sake, Japanese beer or maybe a bottle of Vinho Verde with just a hint of effervescence to celebrate the holidays, life, and the joy of soaking in a private salt tub in the woods.

Planning a gathering or celebration in 2023?...enjoy our Sanctuary with your private hot tubs this Spring. Book now for 2023 events.

Amazing mineral hot bath with a gorgeous view. Actual deep tissue massage that released so much of my tension. Extremely friendly staff who are always there to help. Will definitely make this my go to for special occasions.Arlene PughArlene Pugh ★★★★★ This is one of the most romantic, private, and upscale spas I've experienced. Staff was very friendly. I appreciate the high importance they set on cleanliness and sanitation. My husband and I had the luxury of being in Hut 4, which had the perfect view to see down the mountain. Shoji should be on everyone's Bucket List.Kayla BeaversKayla Beavers ★★★★★ Loved my massage at Shoji! The atmosphere is nice and the service was excellent. Will be returning!Karen JimKaren Jim ★★★★★ The lodge has the best view! Everything was so clean! Really like the shower but the water gets cold after a while! Service was great and I did enjoy the private hot tub a lot! All in all, I would definitely recommend this place to everyone! The best birthday experience I have ever had for sure!Andrew MimbsAndrew Mimbs ★★★★★ This place is fantastic. We came and lodged in January. The snow, the decor, the staff, the lodging, everything is 5 stars. Very clean and and cozyThe freezing weather meant we had to cut our original session short. But the staff were extremely accommodating and comp'd us another session for the next morning. We will definitely be coming backTaylor HamiltonTaylor Hamilton ★★★★★ My husband and I visited shoji today in celebration of our 1st wedding anniversary, and we absolutely loved it and plan on coming back next year!We enjoyed the salt spas with hot chocolate and tea for 1 hour, it was fantastic! Very peaceful and secluded. Afterwords we enjoyed a 90 min couples massage. My therapist was Erik and it was the best massage I’ve ever had (this is coming from a licensed massage therapist!). My husband loved his massage too , he couldn’t remember the therapist’s name unfortunately lol.All of the staff were friendly and helpful, thank you for making our first anniversary memorable!!!-The Grissom’s 🙂Ashley IzquierdoAshley Izquierdo ★★★★★ I just visited at night with my now husband and we had such a nice time. I bookedKinda last minute and was a little bummed it was dark- but it was a wonderful time actually! We got a package that was a one hour private soak- and a 60 minute hand massage for two. It was a great time, the staff was so nice, and we added on tea service. We will definitely be back!Celeste MagounCeleste Magoun ★★★★☆ Beautiful spa. The private baths had nice views, but a somewhat busy road in the distance. The outdoor shower was not as private as expected, but definitely a fun experience. I didn't personally care for the meditation room. The sauna was awesome. Overall, a unique, albeit slightly overpriced, experience.Christopher Hooper (BLUERAVENstudios)Christopher Hooper (BLUERAVENstudios) ★★★★★ A Serene Escape at Shoji Spa & Retreat🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟During a recent visit to Asheville, my wife and I had the pleasure of experiencing Shoji Spa & Retreat, a hidden gem nestled in the mountains. This unique spa offers a tranquil escape with its Japanese-inspired bathing and soaking in completely private outdoor hot tubs. Our experience began with a mountainside tub soak, offering stunning views of the valley below. The serene atmosphere and the natural beauty surrounding us provided a perfect setting for relaxation and rejuvenation. Following the soak, we indulged in a couple's massage, expertly delivered by the skilled therapists at Shoji. The massage was a perfect blend of relaxation and therapeutic techniques, leaving us both feeling refreshed and revitalized.I must confess, I secretly surprised my wife by actually buying one of the authentic Japanese Kimonos from their retail area. The quality and beauty of these kimonos are a testament to Shoji's commitment to providing an authentic and enriching experience.I highly recommend Shoji Spa & Retreat to anyone visiting Asheville or seeking a unique spa experience. The combination of the natural setting, traditional Japanese soaking, and exceptional spa services makes it a must-visit destination.Feel free to check out the 360 tour and photos from my visit on my Google Maps profile, and follow me for more reviews and adventures!Mia WrightMia Wright ★★★★★ Went here for my husband and my first year anniversary and it was AMAZING! Out of all the trips we’ve shared and spas we’ve been to, this one takes the cake. We did the treetop package. We stayed for about four hours and even at the end were sad to leave. The customer service is on point and the seclusion provides a much needed and rejuvenating experience. 10/10 recommendIvyIvy ★★★★★ We love Shoji. It’s a nice little get away. We’ve celebrated two anniversaries here. We always book the Buddha’s Best package. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a relaxing day.julia simonjulia simon ★★★★★ A special treat and comfy, affordable lodgings ♥️ love this spot!Elon BarbeeElon Barbee ★★★★★ I loved this spa !! You really have to just take it all in and relax !! The hot tub and the shower were the besttttttt !! 10/10 ! And well worth the money. This place allows you to just reset and not overthink. Loved it !!Amanda ScheelAmanda Scheel ★★★★★ Stayed for our one year anniversary. I’ve had my eyes on visiting for a while and I am so glad I finally booked it. The House of Earth was serene with a great view, especially seeing the city lights at night. The staff was welcoming and very informative and helpful! Location was perfect for the atmosphere, tucked up in the mountains away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but close enough to make it easy to grab a bottle of wine and come back to relax for the night. Spa services were divine!Justin JereleJustin Jerele ★★★★★ Took wife there for her birthday. Excellent service from the start. It was chilly so the experience in the mineral bath was enhanced. Personally my masseuse Micheal was awesome. Attentive to my trouble spots. My wife also commented to me as her favorite massage. Will return.Adrien HelloAdrien Hello ★★★★★ I was originally unsure whether or not the spa was worth the price at first. But after going with my girlfriend, the exceptional service and great atmosphere really made the visit a great experience. I really hope to come again in the future and try out the massages and not just the hot tubs and sauna.Tim RivettTim Rivett ★★★★★ My wife and I reserved a hot tub visit for our anniversary trip and the experience was wonderful. The staff was very welcoming and the atmosphere was very claiming and peaceful.Dawn EdwardsDawn Edwards ★★★★★ To say that Shoji Spa is incredible would be an understatement. Every treatment was amazing and the staff made sure of it. They were so kind and attentive. The treatment rooms were well appointed, sanitized and beyond relaxing. The outdoor treatments were magical and private with beautiful views of the forest atop its secluded mountain.Jessica BruttonJessica Brutton ★★★★★ I stayed at the House of Earth and the cabin space was lovely! The soaks were everything I’d hoped they’d be and I loved the herbal tea offered as an add-on. Shoji made for a very restful getaway overall with friendly staff and a calm atmosphere. I hope to make it back someday for another visit!Margaret MangasMargaret Mangas ★★★★★ Shoji spa was so lovely! Let me start with getting there - this spa is relatively remote, but they’ve done a great job of placing signs along the side of the road to guide you to the right place. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. I did the 2 hour tub soak with tea service - with this you get to use the cold showers and sauna as well. Very worth the priceDorothy CashoreDorothy Cashore ★★★★☆ We tried Shoji out for a birthday celebration (90 minute soak with access to the sauna and cold showers) and we were totally charmed. It advertises itself as "unpretentious," and as someone who is turned off by more hoity-toity spa environments, I found this place to be magical. I was originally disappointed that I couldn't book us a daytime appointment, but we ended up glad that we were there after dark to enjoy the nighttime ambiance and softly-lit trees. The staff were very gracious, although it's clear they have their work cut out for them because the reception area was not built to accommodate the high volume they are hosting. Yes, it was hopping, but we arrived plenty early and had a wonderfully peaceful experience. Another guest decided to have a loud video call in the tub next to ours, but you know what fixed it? Bubbles! Turning on the jets drowned out all unwanted noise and greatly enhanced the sense of privacy. Cons: We ended up not adding on the tea service or hot chocolate because the prices struck us as high. I was prepared to carry all our stuff around in a tote bag because I'd read reviews beforehand, but it would really take the experience up a notch if they could revamp the space to create room for lockers -- I kept worrying that we were leaving things behind. And while I was fine with the bathhouse culture of having to get changed and shower with no guarantee of privacy, I sympathize with guests who weren't prepared for that and wanted to know about it ahead of time. Shoji should find a way to let people know on the website that privacy during showers can't be guaranteed and that anyone who wants to undress/dress in privacy will have to use the toilet stall.Adam TAdam T ★★★★★ Very relaxing placeAdam ChavesAdam Chaves ★★★★★ My wife and I had the most perfect, relaxing, liberating and intimate time at Shoji, celebrating our dating anniversary during our Asheville getaway. My wife and I booked the Michi (The Path) package with the tea add-on, which turned out to be absolutely perfect. The staff were insanely friendly and informative - we were never left feeling confused, uncomfortable or blindsided by anything, and their kindness only heightened our experience and appreciation for the spa.Be aware that both genders' changing/shower rooms are NOT private; ensure that you are comfortable with that prior to booking your services. The men's room shower area is only separated by a thin curtain that doesn't span the entire area. The changing area is wide open. There IS a private bathroom that you could change in absolutely necessary, but you will still need to shower before using the facility's amenities. The sauna was the perfect way to start our experience, getting us prepped for relaxation and sweating out all the fun of the previous night. It was my first time in a sauna, and I totally see why people love it so.The one-hour outdoor hydrotherapy soak was my personal highlight of the package, complimented by the tea add-on. It's completely private and freeing, allowing for a total focus on your partner and nature with an amazing, surrounding view of mountain forestry. Blue Ridge Parkway IS slightly visible in the far distance, but you can barely see or hear it. We also appreciated the access to the cold showers during our soaking session, which we used a couple of times to cool off from the heat. After a scrub rinse, we were led to our Chea Massage Pod session, which was my wife's highlight. I'm not usually one for massages, but this was to die for - total Zen. The staff maintained the perfect balance of unobtrusiveness and quietness throughout the room for the utmost peaceful time.We finished off our package with the Savasana Retreat session, where we ended up napping (how could you not after everything else?) for the duration, leaving us rejuvenated and ready to take on the rest of the anniversary weekend.R HR H ★★★★★ Very friendly staff, chill vibes, very quiet. Stayed for 2 days, spa services received were deep tissue massage, IR massage pads, sauna, and hot tub. The services are usually booked 2-3 weeks in advance so plan ahead. We loved our stay.. staff was very unpretentious and accommodating.Dayna StarodubtsevaDayna Starodubtseva ★★★★★ This spa was amazing! My husband and I went for the hot tub & scrub after. Don’t listen to the reviews claiming there is “scum” in the tubs- they are truly mineral water, so the minerals leave a residue/wear on the metal of the tub over time. The staff were super friendly & we felt so relaxed during our visit. The tea was a really nice add on as well! Do note that the changing rooms/showers are not private, which is typical for a Japanese style spa and what we expected. It was super easy to find as long as you follow the GPS and signs. We definitely plan to come back!Michael FotinatosMichael Fotinatos ★★★★★ Been going here for 4 years. Excellent massages and open air private hot tubs.Jamie PinderJamie Pinder ★★★★★ Wonderful experience for a nice mini spa day! It was very relaxing and everyone was very nice. Would def go back again next time I'm in the area!Hadleigh PainterHadleigh Painter ★★★★★ amazing venue, staff and energy. I will be returning (even if it involves driving 2 hours each way just to visit this one place)Laura HillardLaura Hillard ★★★★★ Best massage I’ve had yet! We went for a relaxing birthday couples massage and my masseuse Michael was incredible. He even incorporated warm towels into our session that was so soothing. Sincere thank you! We will definitely be going back to explore more of what Shoji has to offer. Such a relaxing atmosphere.L SL S ★★★★★ The location and view are perfect. I would say that it is the best value for what you get without going to a strip mall massage parlor.Sara ShannonSara Shannon ★★★★★ We did the couples hot tub soak and massage package. Liza and Eric were amazing massage therapists. This was the highlight of our honeymoon activities!(We definitely needed it after the stress from the wedding.) Would come back in a heartbeat.BraisedinBraisedin ★★★★★ Ok I gave location a 4 only because this place is a little tricky to get to. This place is tucked away on a small street. When we went a lot of cars on the street so it was a bit of a squeeze. After that this place is a 5 all over. The hot tub view is amazing. The whole area even though there is several tubs around you feel like your alone. Highly recommend this placeLorraine Melk VyasLorraine Melk Vyas ★★★★☆ A little differentAriel OxendineAriel Oxendine ★★★★★ It was one of the most relaxing experiences I have had. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The soak is private, and you just get to listen to nature while lounging in the tub. The tea was delicious, and so were the snacks. Definitely will be visiting again. Hopefully, I can include one of the massages.Donna FranklinDonna Franklin ★★★★★ Had an amazing mother/daughter experience here. So relaxing, terrific staff and overall wonderful adventures.Jessica CreechJessica Creech ★★★★★ What a wonderful place! Great massages and very quite and relaxing. The exfoliation scrub is made locally and smells and feels amazing!! Definitely will return!K BrieK Brie ★★★★★ Very Hidden Location. Rooms are better than you actually can imagine! Hydrotherapy pool was amazing! Definitely would love to go back!Josh FordJosh Ford ★★★★★ This place was amazing. The salt water bath and the massage were amazing. As a 40 something male, I have been missing out on experiences. This place was great.Sarah ChambersSarah Chambers ★★★★★ My husband and I went here on our honeymoon to do the Nihon for two. It was an amazing experience. We did a tub soak and then got massages. They brought us tea and checked in on us. The staff was amazing. The views were stunning! It is literally in the middle of the woods but it’s perfect. I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Amanda and Marta did our massages and they were so thorough and kind. Definitely recommend Shoji!Aaron KingAaron King ★★★★★ I got a massage here, and I forgot what day it was or where I was at. 12\10 highly recommended.Erin AcostaErin Acosta ★★★★★ Beautiful atmosphere! The front desk people were very friendly, although I wish they would’ve showed us how to use the showers and maybe take each group in privately, but that may be just the way they do things. Enjoyed the sauna, a cold shower, and soaking in the tub. Our massage therapists were fantastic!! I’ve had a lot of massages in my life.. and just amazing! I wish we could’ve stayed on the property! I highly recommend this place for a pampering getaway!Laurie ReeseLaurie Reese ★★★★★ I am a repeat customer and huge fan of Shoji! My girlfriends and I love to get together once a year and pamper ourselves here by soaking in the outdoor tubs and sipping tea. I highly recommend Shoji to anyone looking to be good to themselves, get away from it all, and relax and enjoy the fresh mountain air + enjoying a spa treatment! Five stars!dannydanny ★★★★★ Just a magical location and the service is outstandingTreat yourselfShelby MasonShelby Mason ★★★★★ We had a wonderful time at Shoji. It was tranquil and beautiful. The staff treat you like royalty. Facilities are clean and there are thoughtful touches all throughout, including the (slightly scary and steep) way up the hill.I was a little nervous based on some of the reviews. Some comments about the locker room aren’t wrong. It’s very small but I came early to my appointment and had no issues. Although, the shower was too fancy and confusing to use at first! I had a lovely experience and I’m sure you will too!Mercy JosephMercy Joseph ★★★★★ Such a healing sanctuary!!!Kim ScalesKim Scales ★★★★★ Great solo experience. I only did a 90 minute hot tub soak and a savasana session but it was so relaxing and I left the spa feeling great. 90 minutes was perfect for the hot tub soak and ordering the herbal tea and Japanese crackers made the experience even better. The savasana session was so peaceful that I fell asleep within minutes. Definitely recommend to anyone looking to relax for a few hours.Susan PainterSusan Painter ★★★★★ Beautiful grounds. Fabulous service. Don't miss the tea service. Brings everything to the next level.Amy ChurchillAmy Churchill ★★★★★ Loved our full day at the spa. The soaking tubs were the perfect way to begin before the 60 min massage. Eric and Becca did an amazing job of getting the knots out of tights muscles. The infrared heating pads and quiet time were the perfect transition to the infrared tree top sauna and lounge area. The weather was amazing! The final Himalayan salt scrub session under the trees was the best finale and left us super soft and truly relaxed. Highly recommend!Caroline LaPercheCaroline LaPerche ★★★★★ Very cute place! Small lot bc it’s up a mountain but had no issues. Service was fantastic. Hot tub soak and massage. Can’t wait to go back and get another package.Sarah SimsSarah Sims ★★★★★ I absolutely LOVED soji. It was relaxing and rejuvenating, the ambience was unique and inviting. It was an experience I’ll remember forever. Amanda was my massage therapist today and made the experience even better than it already was. I’ve had quite a few massages and she is the best I’ve gone to thus far. I will definitely go back.js_loader
